Google Chrome - The Future of Web Browsing
What’s this? Google has taken a new leap into development, with the creation and soon release of its web browser “Google Chrome”. So many opinions already circulate the web with discussion of such, and the browser is not even available yet. The release of Google Chrome is scheduled for September 2nd of this year (Tomorrow). Perhaps the most anxious creation of Google since its search engine, Google Chrome is said to be equipped with so many new features to the web, it is a new start for browsers world wide.
Google released several aspects of the beta browser in a comic, found here. They also posted details in their blog, found here. In which they unveiled what could be the most needed change in browsers today, different processes for different tabs. Just hearing that is enough to make any internet user jump in excitement. We all hate cluttering up our start menu bar with several applications, which is why the tab was invented in the first place. However, tabs meant that if one page froze up, all of your pages froze up. With Google Chrome the frozen tabs are isolated into their own process, which means that you don’t have to lose space on your start menu bar, and you don’t have to lose your information on several tabs!
When I was informed of Google’s plan to release a browser, I was a bit skeptical and uneasy. I thought “The lead ad marketeers are going to release a browser? Great, it’ll probably be cluttered with unwanted content, suggested terms, and search engines.” However, after a bit of reading, my skepticism turned to excitement and anticipation for the newest Google creation. The comic strip spoke of ideas this soon to be new internet fad will incorporate, such as Sandboxing!
Often while we browse we expose ourselves to harmful information, websites, and people. In an attempt to thwart unsatisfied web browsers, Google has included a new feature they call “Sandboxing”. In Sandboxing there are two levels: the user and the sandbox. The purpose of this feature is to allow the user to keep all of their data, and the only thing that the sandbox can do is reply to the data sent to it by the user! This prevents the low end levels from sending you unwanted malicious software, and malicious content.
That only covers a few details released, there were many more covered in the comic strip, such as “Incognito”. A feature that allows users to browse the internet without storing any information on their computer. This prevents the saving of history in that tab, or of cookies, which could also prevent such things as tracking cookies! Then there’s the stance against phishing, in which Google has graciously compiled a list of websites which have been ear-marked as bad, or falsified, in an attempt to stop such.
I’d have to say, there’s so much to cover, but so little web space. So before I finish up, I’d like to comment on something Yahoo stated in their business section. Sure, it is obvious that Google Chrome poses a threat to major premium browsers whom do not look for the bettering of the web, but simply wish to make a buck. However, such a threat should not be taken lightly. The ideas Google has come up with for their browser far surpasses that of the Microsoft Corporation with their Internet Explorer.
If you were to ask a developer today whom they respected more, “Microsoft or Google”, the respected bunch would say “Google”. They have done fantastic in their approach towards the people, and their service is much better. If you ask me, I’d say that Microsoft should feel threatened by Google Chrome’s release, as it only marks a turning point in Google.
Hopefully, one day, Google will decide to release its own operating system. That’s something to look forward to even more. For now, we’ll stick with the exciting release of Google Chrome, and hope that its appearance does as is intended, and changes the way we as users and developers browse the web!
Good job Google, you have our support!
