Free Fan Adapter / Cable for XFX Geforce 8800GS Owners!
Are you an owner of a GeForce 8800GS from XFX? I certainly am. I ordered the videocard when I first bought this computer, and it works great. The only problem with the 8800GS is that the card itself is really loud and noisy. You can turn on your computer and hear the fan, and it really does get annoying. The fan is 100% on with no temperature control, and will never be any quieter without the fan controller. I read on some reviews on the fan, that people have called in and received an adaptor to reduce the sound of the fan. I’ve looked at places for where to find the fan adaptor, little did I know, you couldn’t buy it anywhere. You can get it for free.
I play COD4 with suburb quality and even bought a dual monitor, to use with the videocard. It runs steadily with no BSOD or video spikes whatsoever. I download movies to watch, but must always use headsets because the noise of the fan itself is way too loud. If you make a google search for ‘8800gs fan‘ you will find that most of the results ends up in a user complaining about the fan. I just installed the fan adaptor. Let me tell you, it works well.
After looking around and going to support forums asking about the fan, people just suggest me buy a new card, or call XFX themselves. Thing is, I didn’t want to call, and not know what to ask, because if I do, they will just tell me no, and I will leave with nothing. I use first use the contact form on XFX, but received no replies for a week. I then registered my product and used the support ticketing system. Got the fan adaptor in 4 business days. Free? Great!
The adaptor is actually just a one inch insulated cable, but will be an adaptor for the existing fan cable. I’m not sure what it does, but I think it gives supplies less input power to the fan itself. On the instructions sheet, which is hard to see the diagram because it’s in black and white, has a little warning. It says:
** WARNING **
To use this cable you will need sufficient case ventilation. Using this without sufficient ventilation could cause overheating and system crashes. You must have at least one intake and one exhaust port with fans.
I disregarded the warning and installed it. The fan is less than half of what it used to sound like, so I’m happy, so far. It’s been 15 minutes since I’ve installed the adaptor
Being hardware illiterate and impatient, I had trouble getting the videocard out of the PCI-E slot. I put it in, I didn’t know I had to press a release to take it out. I broke the braket of my mobo, but thankfully the computer still boots, and videocard is still working. Anyways, here’s what you owners have been looking for, the how to:
1. To get the videocard adaptor, you must own an XFX Geforce 8800GS videocard.
2. You must register at: http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/Help/Support.aspx

3. After you’ve registered, you must register your product. Please note that you would need to have the Serial number of your videocard. This is located on a sticker on the videocard itself. Unless you still have the original packaging from your videocard, there should be a doortag with the serial number on it. Otherwise, you would need to open your computer and find the S/N from the card.
4. After you’ve registered your product, open a support ticket and request a 8800GS fan adaptor because your current fan is too loud.
Here is an example of my support ticket. Hope it works out the same for you.

I don’t even own this and I want too! Great blog, you did an awesome job explaining the product.
I have the Nvidia Geforce 8800gs and was happy the way it perform, I was able to play my Crysis on high setting and it look it awesome and play with no glitch what so ever, I did notice after playing the game for about 20 minutes, that my video cards with get hot, So did not have any money on me to buy a cooling system for my computer, So i went to my local hardware store, Pick up a Ventalation tube and connected to my pc on one end and the other to my AC, Ever since, i have been playing Crysis for more then 3 hours without any issue, But yes, you will need to have a nice cooling system if you like to see the full pontential of this video cards.
wow, nice description on the product I hate the fan noise that my stupid computer makes so does my roommate especially before a test night. I may get this because of you thanks.
Nice one i have the nvidia 8600 gs although not as good as your graphic card it performs well and can handle crysis on medium settings. Who would have thought you get something for free like that.
The 8600 should also be eligible for the free adapter, Arsenal

I don’t think they could do anything but change the signature there isn’t much more to say except that they can mail you a cable that will help. Anyhow, that is pretty cool.
thanks man, i hope i get a cable too
Hi UZI-man, thanks for visiting! Please update us on the status of the cable
I asked them for the adapter five days ago and they still didn’t reply to me
I will never buy another XFX card ever!!!
Nvm they finally answerd me today and they are sending me the adapter :), I guess i had to be more patient.
thanks a lot. within 1 day a response. i Hope to get the adapter very fast. But one question, is the fan now controlealble or just much slower?
Floris, I think the adapter just makes the fan slower, thus the lighter noise. It should still have enough fanpower to cool the card, and makes it very relaxed compared to the normal sound of the fan.
